Puppies should not be left alone for prolonged periods of time. If you know that you will have to leave your puppy alone a lot, you should ideally refrain from getting a puppy until your living conditions have changed and have become more suitable for a dog. A puppy that is left alone too much will be hard to house train, and it is also cruel to the puppy.

A puppy can be left alone for shorter periods of time, and training your dog to be alone is an important part of the house training. Start by leaving your puppy alone for a short while, and then gradually prolong the periods. Eventually, your dog will be able to stay home alone for several hours without feeling insecure and starting to bark, howl or chew on things.

When you leave your puppy alone, it can be advisable to keep it in one single room instead of letting it roam free in the entire house or apartment. It is much easier to make one room “puppy-safe” than an entire home. You can protect the floor with newspaper and make the puppy feel safe by placing its bed and favorite toys in the room. The puppy must also have access to a bowl of fresh water.

Give your puppy a lot of attention and learn more about its habits. As soon as your puppy has woken up in the morning or after a nap during the day, it should be taken outdoors to relieve itself. You should also take it outside as soon as you notice that a playing session is over, or the puppy has finished eating or drinking. A young puppy can need to be taken outside every 45 minutes or even more frequent. The more time you spend on house training, the faster your puppy will be housebroken.
