Dog House Training Tips

Dog house training tip # 1

Have a lot of patience and make sure that you are consistent when house training your puppy. Even if your puppy really wants to obey you, it might be impossible for it to do so. It might for instance have misunderstood your instructions, or you might give different instructions at different times. It is very important to be consistent during house training, since a puppy hardly can understand that it is allowed to urinate indoors when you have a headache but will be scolded for doing the same thing a few hours later.

Dog house training tip # 2

Read a lot about puppy and dog behavior and development. This way, you will gain a better understanding for your dog and realize what you can expect of it. You will for instance learn that puppies can not fully control their bowels until they are a few months old. Even a very obedient and properly trained puppy can therefore have accidents indoor during its first few months.

Dog house training tip # 3

Puppies should not be left alone for prolonged periods of time. If you know that you will have to leave your puppy alone a lot, you should ideally refrain from getting a puppy until your living conditions have changed and have become more suitable for a dog. A puppy that is left alone too much will be hard to house train, and it is also cruel to the puppy.

Dog house training tips # 4

A puppy can be left alone for shorter periods of time, and training your dog to be alone is an important part of the house training. Start by leaving your puppy alone for a short while, and then gradually prolong the periods. Eventually, your dog will be able to stay home alone for several hours without feeling insecure and starting to bark, howl or chew on things.

Dog house training tip # 5

When you leave your puppy alone, it can be advisable to keep it in one single room instead of letting it roam free in the entire house or apartment. It is much easier to make one room “puppy-safe” than an entire home. You can protect the floor with newspaper and make the puppy feel safe by placing its bed and favorite toys in the room. The puppy must also have access to a bowl of fresh water.

Dog house training tips # 6

Give your puppy a lot of attention and learn more about its habits. As soon as your puppy has woken up in the morning or after a nap during the day, it should be taken outdoors to relieve itself. You should also take it outside as soon as you notice that a playing session is over, or the puppy has finished eating or drinking. A young puppy can need to be taken outside every 45 minutes or even more frequent. The more time you spend on house training, the faster your puppy will be housebroken.
