Dog Potty Training Tips

There exist many different methods when it comes to dog obedience and dog potty training. A method that is right for one dog might be unsuitable for another. You must therefore be attentive to your specific puppy and try to find a dog potty training method that works well for him or her. Below you will find a few dog potty training tips that have worked out well for many puppy owners. Hopefully some of them will work out well for you and your puppy too, or inspire you to create a dog potty training method that is ideal for your dog.

Dog potty training tip # 1

Never forget that a puppy will not be able to fully control its bowels until it is several months old. If an accident happens indoor when your puppy is younger than this, it is not because it is a disobedient dog. We do not require human babies to fully control their bowels until they are old enough, and the same thing is true for small puppies. This does not mean that you should not potty train your young puppy; it simply means that you must be ready to accept accidents along the way.

Dog potty training tip # 2

If you allow a puppy to relieve itself indoors, e.g. on a newspaper, it will most likely return to the same spot the next time, or try to find another newspaper.

Dog potty training tips # 3

You can make the potty training easier by paying a lot of attention to your puppy and understanding its habits. There are certain moments when your puppy will most likely need to relive it self. The puppy should always be brought outdoors as soon as it wakes up in the morning. Some puppies will wake up at sun rise, so you might have to go up really early when you are potty training a small puppy. A visit outside should also be the last thing that the puppy does before going to sleep in the evening. Other “certain moments” will occur right after a meal, when the puppy has just finished playing with something or someone, and when the puppy wakes up after a nap during the day.

Dog potty training tip # 4

If you notice that you puppy is sniffing the floor, you should immediately bring it outdoors since it might be sniffing for a suitable spot to relieve itself. The same is true if your notice your dog squatting – take him outside immediately.

Dog potty training tip # 5

During a hot day, your puppy will drink more water, and it will therefore be necessary to take it out more often.

Dog potty training tips # 6

Always take your dog out first thing in the morning, and attend to your own tasks later. Letting your puppy wait while you take a shower and get properly dressed will frequently result in a wet floor. When you are potty training a puppy, it is perfectly okay to run out in bathrobe and slippers.

Dog potty training tips # 7

If you let your puppy sleep in a crate, you can speed up the potty training since dogs dislike relieving themselves where they sleep. This does not mean that you can let your puppy wait for you while you get ready in the morning. The puppy should still be brought outside as soon as it wakes up. Also keep in mind that accidents will happen during the first few months, since the young puppy is unable to fully control its bowels..
