Dog Health

In this section of the site we have gathered information about dog health. Just like humans, dogs can be plagued by a wide range of different health problems. Fortunately for our canine friends, the health of the domestic dog is one of the most thoroughly researched areas in veterinary medicine and today many health problems in dogs can be cured or at least treated. Preventive care is naturally also very important and providing your dog with daily exercise and suitable amounts of nutritious high-quality food will prevent a lot of canine health problems.

Canine health problems can be divided into five broad categories:

  1. Transferable diseases and parasites
  2. Genetic problems
  3. Poison
  4. Malnutrition, obesity and other health problems linked to feeding habits
  5. Other health problems

In the first group we will find health problems caused by transferable organisms, including virus, bacteria, fungi, protoza, and larger parasites. Only a few diseases can be transferred from humans to dogs and vice versa, but among them we will find several dreaded conditions like rabies and hookworm infestation.

In the second group we will find hereditary conditions, such as hip dysplasia, luxating patellas and blindness. These ailments can be prevented by careful breeding and comprehensive screening. Different dog breeds are prone do different genetic problems, and the screening must therefore be adapted for each dog breed. Always research the dog breed you are interested in before you purchase a puppy in order to find out if you should request a screening for a certain hereditary disease.

A lot of dogs are poisoned each year and many of them will die without proper veterinary attention. It is important to remember that substances that can be tolerated by humans can be very dangerous to dogs, puppies or certain dog breeds. You should for instance avoid giving your dog chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts and hops. Alcohol and other drugs must of course also be kept out of reach from dogs. Common household chemicals causes a lot of accidents, especially antifreeze and pest poison.

The feeding habits of your dog will have a large impact on short term as well as long term health. Obesity can lead to a wide range of health issues, including cardiac and arterial problems. Malnutrition is naturally also dangerous and you therefore must make sure that your dog's diet contains all the necessary nutrients. Remember that puppies, very active dogs, breeding dogs, sick dogs and old dogs can have nutritional requirements that differ from those of the “standard dog”.

The last category contains a multitude of different health problems that can be divided further into several subcategories. The health problems found in this category can sometimes also be included in more than one of the above categories. Diabetes is for instance an example of a health problem that can be caused by a combination of genetic problems and feeding habits. In this category you will also find all the various health problems caused by accidents, such as broken bones and concussion.
