Free online dog training tip # 1

Different dogs will need different training methods. Just because your friend and her dog have had great success with a certain training method, you should not take for granted that it is the perfect training method for you and your dog too. The individual temperament and personality of a dog, as well as its breed, are important factors when determining which training method that is best. A dog training method that works out well for a Golden retriever might for instance be highly unsuitable for a sled dog breed. Generally speaking, a dog belonging to a retrieving or herding dog breed will be inclined to work very close to humans and pay careful attention to directions. When you are trying to teach this type of dog to return to you when you call or whistle, you can therefore usually be successful using a method where you turn around and start walking away from the dog when it does not respond to your call. Since the dog's natural instinct is to stay close to you, it will try to catch up with you to avoid being left alone. If you try this method with a hound dog breed traditionally used for hunting, you might however end up with a very different result. Many hunting dogs have been bred to work independently in the forest and locate game on their own. When the dog has found something interesting, it will call you and wait for you to turn up. If you turn your back on this type of dog and start walking away, chances are it will simply continue sniffing around and ignore that fact that you are leaving it alone.

Your training sessions will usually be more effective if you keep them short. It is better to train your dog for 10 minutes twice a day, than 40 minutes every second day. Keep in mind that puppies tire easily. When you are training a young puppy, you should therefore ideally keep the training sessions shorter than 5 minutes.

Avoid training your dog when you are stressed or in a bad mood. Dogs are sensitive, and your dog will most likely feel that something is wrong with you. When you are stressed or in a bad mood, you will probably also have less patience – and patience is one of the keys to successful dog training. This dog training tip is of course only a rule of thumb. If you feel that some quality time with your dog would cheer you up, a training session can naturally be a very good idea. The important thing is not to let your bad mood affect the training.

Always end a training session with something fun and positive that will build confidence in your dog. If your dog has failed to understand a new command, end the training session with some familiar commands that you know that it already understands.
